Geography of Adilabad

Adilabad is the second largest in the newly formed Telangana. River Godavari flowing through this district separates it from Nizambad and Karimnagar districts. Towards its north are Yavatmal and Chanda districts, on the south is Karimnagar district and Nizamabad district is towards the west along with Nanded district of Maharashtra state.

Climate in Adilabad

The summers in Adilabad are hot and dry and last from the month of March to May. December to February is winter season while July is the time when there are incessant rains. June to September is South-West monsoon season. The normal annual rainfall is 1044.5 mm. It is very cold in the month of December.

The Mavala lake is only 6 kms towards the south of Adilabad and was built during the Nizam period. Water from the lake is supplied to Adilabad. There is a park also just adjacent to this lake.

Principal crops are jowar, paddy, cotton, wheat, maize, chillies, sugarcane, soya. Above average rainfall makes the region suitable for horticulture --- cultivation of fruits, vegetables, flowers. Sericulture has also been taken up by a cross section of people. also. Animal husbandry is another occupation in which people rear sheep and live stock. Adilabad is a hub for cotton mills.

Rivers and Hills in Adilabad District

The most important river in Adilabad district is Godavari river which is also the longest river in in peninsular India. Penganga, Wardha river, Pranahita river, Kadam and Peddavagu are tributaries of river Godavari. River Godavari enters the district near Basara in Mudhole taluk. Rivers Godavari and Penganga form the boundary of Adilabad district.

The Mahbubghat is highest peak in Sahyadri parvat or Satnala range in Adilabad district. It is 264 metres (866 feet) high.
